  • Headaches
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Excessively watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Sore or tired eyes
  • Burning or itchy eyes
  • Sore neck, shoulders, or back
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sensitivity to light

Causes of Digital Eye Strain

The “digital” in digital eye strain is a bit of a misnomer. Eye strain occurs when your eyes get tired after intense use, whether using a digital screen or reading a book or driving long distances. However, digital screens are uniquely demanding and make the eyes work hard.

Additionally, glare and reflections, poor screen contrast, unideal angles, poor workplace ergonomics, and uncorrected vision problems can all exacerbate digital eye strain discomfort.

The good news is that these symptoms are temporary and don’t lead to long-term consequences.

Digital Eye Strain Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

Digital eye strain can be diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam. This exam will also diagnose vision problems, like hyperopia, for example, that may be worsening your digital eye strain symptoms. It will also rule out other potential causes related to eye disorders or diseases.

The most cost-effective treatment for digital eye strain is just to give your eyes a break! Follow the 20-20-20 rule to give your eyes an adequate amount of time to relax: every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to focus on something at least 20 feet away.

Also ensure you’re sitting properly while working on a computer, viewing your computer screen at the appropriate distance and angle, and that your environment is conducive to long periods spent at the computer:

  • Position your computer screen 15 to 20 degrees below eye level and about 20 to 28 inches from your eyes.
  • Position your computer screen away from light sources to avoid glare.
  • Use an anti-glare screen if you can’t avoid bright lights.
  • Use a comfortable chair and sit with your feet flat on the floor.
  • Remember to blink! Research shows that we blink half as often as we need to while performing focused work, leading to digital eye strain.
