Cataract Causes

Although cataracts are a natural part of aging, they can develop under other circumstances as well:

• Congenital cataracts are present at birth.
• Pediatric cataracts develop in children.
• Posterior capsule opacification, also known as “secondary cataracts,” occasionally occurs after cataract surgery.
• Traumatic cataracts develop after the eye has experienced blunt or penetrating trauma (injury) that affects the lens fibers.
• Radiation cataracts may form after an individual has undergone radiation therapy for cancer treatments.

Age is the biggest risk factor, but your risk may also go up if you:

• Smoke.

• Have had an eye injury.

• Take certain medications.

Some intervention will help in the early stages, but cataracts will eventually start to impact your ability to read, drive, write, and perform day-to-day activities. If your cataracts start interfering in your quality of life, you may be referred for cataract surgery.

How to Prevent Cataracts

Although cataracts are natural, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk:

• Protect your eyes from UV radiation by wearing sunglasses and a hat while outdoors.
• Make lifestyle changes, like eating eye-friendly foods and quitting smoking.
• Manage health conditions, like diabetes, and follow all doctor’s advice.
• Undergo annual eye exams, especially if 60 or over.
